Vocabulary learning is an important part of English teaching. It has great impact on the improvement of students' English reading competence. However,in the process of learning English, one of the biggest obstacles students encounter is vocabulary, and the lack of vocabulary restricts the improvement of students' reading competence.Designed for all the students' development, vocabulary module teaching helps to reset students' status, improve their learning methods, inspire their interest in learning,so as to improve their reading competence effectively. In recent years, most of the research on vocabulary teaching is aimed at college and high school learning, and there are few studies on vocabulary teaching of secondary vocational school students. Therefore, the author tries to apply the vocabulary module teaching to the English classroom of secondary vocational school students.Based on cognitive psychology theory and humanistic psychology theory, this paper designs a vocabulary module teaching plan for secondary vocational students from two aspects: vocabulary module and reading module. It attempts to answer the following questions through teaching experiments:(1)What are the effects of English vocabulary module teaching on the vocabulary cognitive ability of secondary vocational students in reading?(2)What are the effects of English vocabulary module teaching on the reading level of secondary vocational school students? In order to answer these two questions, the author did a questionnaire survey on vocabulary learning and reading competence and carried out a vocabulary and reading proficiency test on the students from two classes of equal number and English basis. Then one of the classeswas selected for a 20-week teaching experiment. The experimental class adopted the vocabulary module teaching, while the control class adopted the traditional vocabulary teaching. After the experiment, another vocabulary and reading proficiency test was taken, and an interview was conducted in the experimental class. The author collected and analyzed the data during the whole process. The major findings of the study are as follows:Firstly,English vocabulary module teaching can improve students' vocabulary cognitive ability in reading.Vocabulary module decomposition improves students' understanding of the words and reduces the difficulty of memory;reading module strengthens the imagination association of the words with its context;module teaching reinforces learning interests and enhances learning enthusiasm.Secondly,English vocabulary module teaching can improve students' reading level.Vocabulary module teaching reduces the barriers that students don't know the words they have learned in reading;it enhances the understanding of new vocabulary through association and other methods, improves the speed and accuracy of reading, and cultivates students' interest in English reading. The innovation of this study is to explore English teaching from the perspective of secondary vocational school students, enrich and expand the research of English vocabulary teaching, which can provide reference for secondary vocational English teaching. However, due to the limitations of the subjects and time in the experiment, there are still some things which need further exploring, and the effectiveness of the experiment needs further investigating.
