On Translation Of Xiang Dialect In Han Shaogong's The Dictionary Of Maqiao From Multi-perspectives

The thesis,adopting descriptive translation method,aims to discuss the typical translation methods applied to Xiang dialect in Han Shaogong's The Dictionary of Maqiao by Julia Lovell and illuminate the rationality of them from the perspective of rewriting theory,stylistic marker system and reception aesthetics respectively.The thesis finds that Julia Lovell omits Xiang dialect words which are repetitive synonymous lexical items or full of cultural information.From the perspective of rewriting theory,this thesis holds that Julia Lovell's omission of Xiang dialect is affected by her understanding of Chinese literature's marginal status and her careless attitude towards dialect.As a western translator,Julia Lovell first provides English readers with a smooth text.Thus,she omits Xiang dialect which hinders reading.Additionally,Julia Lovell applies the use of English colloquialisms to translation of Xiang dialect in dialogues and in narrative language.From the perspective of stylistic marker system,the different forms of English colloquialisms in Julia Lovell's translation convey the colloquial and vulgar feature of Xiang dialect from three aspects: phonological markers,syntactic markers and lexical markers.The use of English colloquialisms loses the regional colors of Xiang dialect,but achieves the reproduction of style of Xiang dialect.The thesis also finds that Julia Lovell adopts calque translation,including semantic calque,literal calque,referential calque and phonological calque to translate Xiang dialect in the list of entries.From the perspective of reception aesthetics,the translator remains both formsand meanings of these Xiang dialect entries,conveying the novelty of The Dictionary of Maqiao.Calque translation enhances the aesthetic effect,satisfies readers' innovative expectation and broadens their horizon of expectation.
