A large number of researchers at home and abroad have done extensive researches on negative transfer of the first language.It is found that the negative transfer of the first language has significant effects on the writing and translation of Chinese EFL(English as foreign language)learners.However,previous researches are about one single language output skill based on writing or translation separately.The comparative researches on the influence of negative transfer of the first language on different language outputs are rare.Language learning process is comprehensive,and the improvement of language proficiency is affected by different language skills interactively.The research purpose is to know the influence of negative transfer of the first language on English learning,especially to compare the different effects of the negative transfer on different skills.This research chose the EFL learners as the subjects and the errors caused by negative transfer in writing and translation as research samples,and analyzed the influence of negative transfer on writing and on translation through empirical research.This research adopted the quantitative method,with five types of interlingual errors,two different language output activities,and three English language proficiency groups as independent variables.This research studied the influence of negative transfer of the first language on writing and translation by using Microsoft Excel and SPSS22.0 to analyze the distributions of five types of interlingual errors.The results showed that:(1)there were significant differences among five types of interlingual errors caused by negative transfer.In writing,EFL learners are more easily influenced by negative transfer at grammar and cohesion level;in translation,EFL learners are more easily influenced by negative transfer at lexicon and grammar level.(2)EFL learners are more easily influenced by negative transfer in translation than in writing at lexicon level,and they are more easily influenced by negative transfer in writing than in translation at cohesion level.(3)EFL learners with high English proficiency are more easily influenced by negative transfer in translation than in writing at grammar level,and they are more easily influenced by negative transfer in writing than in translation at cohesion level.For learners with average English proficiency,there was no significant difference between negative transfer of the first language in writing and translation.The learners with low English proficiency are more easily influenced by negative transfer in translation than in writing at lexicon level,and they are more easily influenced by negative transfer in writing than in translation at cohesion level.Based on the research findings,this thesis can deepen learners' understanding of negative transfer of first language in writing and translation.At the same time,the findings of the present study suggest that EFL learners with different English proficiency should adopt different approaches to overcome the different influence of negative transfer of their first language on writing and translation at different language levels.
