A Report On C-E Translation Of Proposals For NPC&CPPCC In 2018

The source text entitled “A Summary of Proposals by Entrepreneurial Representative in 2018 China's Two Sessions” was from the fourth issue of the journal Business Research in 2018.The source text is a series proposals by 26 representative entrepreneurs,which focus on the economic,social,livelihood problems and other hot issues in China.To complete translation task,various solutions to the current problems in related fields have been also proposed.Text analysis has been done and typical translation problems have been identified,such as characteristics on semantic level and syntactic level in the source text.On semantic level,a large number of repeated words appear in the source text creating redundancy.Many words with Chinese characteristics are highly descriptive and vivid but hard to find corresponding expressions in the target language.On syntactic level,a large number of sentences without subjects and sentences with loose structure occur in the source text,creating difficulties for translation.With above problems in mind,related literature have been explored and read through.Translation Ethics by Andrew Chesterman has been found appropriate to solve the above problems.Translation is an intercultural communicative activity,the readability of which will be affected by the author of the source text,the target readers,language differences,cultural backgrounds and other factors.Through translation,the author of the source text,the translator and the target readers can establish a relationship by communication and understanding,which will be regulated by a set of rules and norms of translation — the major components of Translation Ethics.Since the source text is a summary of proposals related to political and economic fields in China,expressions with Chinese characteristics are an obvious feature.As a bridge between Chinese and English,the quality of translation will directly affect the communication between the author of the source text,the translator and the target readers,the translation task naturally requires the guidance of Translation Ethics.Translation Ethics consist of five modes: ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment.Among which,ethics of representation,service and communication can be applied as the guidance to translate the source text,which correspond with translation strategies of foreignization,domestication and dynamic communication.For the problem on semantic level,translation methods such as addition,liberal and combination of the both can help express words with Chinese characteristics;For the problems on syntactic level,methods of adding subjects,shift and combination can be applied to make the translation of Chinese structures understood by the target readers.The report consists of six major parts: task description,preparations before translation,analysis of the source text,theory exploration and strategies applied,cases illustrating translation theory and strategies,proofreading,and finally comes the conclusion.
