Translation for international communication plays an increasingly important role in today’s foreign exchanges. In order to promote internationalization and strengthen international communication, domestic universities have translated school publicity materials into English and published them on their official websites. The translation texts involved in this translation practice report are taken from the international communication manuscripts translated by the author during the internship in the Overseas Media Center of the Publicity Department of Tianjin University. The topics include news reports and information announcements which show a glimpse of the university, students and faculties.According to Skopos Theory,it is believed that the entire translation process, including the choice of translation methods and strategies,is determined by the communicative purpose of the translation behavior. The Skopos Theory contains three major rules, namely Skopos rule, coherence rule and loyalty rule. The translator needs to select these three rules as guiding rules according to his understanding of the original text. This report, taking the Skopos Theory as the reference, mainly focuses on the characteristics of Chinese words and sentences, differences between Chinese and English, and analyzes the translation texts of publicity materials, and explores how the three rules of Skopos are applicable in the target text and how they are utilized for translators to select translation methods. In the report, author combines theory with practice on specific cases, selects representative examples from two aspects of words and sentences with Chinese characteristics, and analyzes the translation from the aspects of language differences, logical relations, and translation purposes.Summary on translation practice for international communication is hereby given.Through case study, the author finds that the translator needs to combine the characteristics of the words, the sentences and their roles in the text to make a comprehensive judgment, and then select applicable rules and translation methods. At the vocabulary level, the translator mainly follows loyalty rule, using substitution, omission, and conversion to avoid repeating the same words frequently in order to comply with language habits of English readers;for Chinese abbreviations, the translator mainly applies Skopos rule and the loyalty rule, clarifies the inherent logicalrelationship of Chinese abbreviations, and adopts methods to achieve the author’s expression purpose, such as simplifying words, highlighting, etc. On the sentence level, for Chinese non-subject sentences, the translator mainly follows the coherence rule, adopts amplification and other methods to clarify the logical subject in the translation,so as to avoid obstacles to reading for foreign readers;for sentences with concealed logic and classical Chinese sentences, the translator refers to the Skopos rule and coherence rule, adopts methods such as addition, free translation and literal translation.Due to the hypotaxis and parataxis differences between English and Chinese, the translator makes adjustment to conform to the reading habits of English readers. |
