The evaluation of different translation versions of the same work has always been a topic of concern.As a great Western religious classic,the Bible is not only a literary masterpiece,but also one of the sources of Western literature and cultures.After Christianity was introduced to China,the church presided over the translation of the Bible,and the translated version of the Chinese Union Version(CUV)was published in 1919.This version has been the most widespread and influential translation version of the Bible in China.After nearly a hundred years,with the continuous changes of the Chinese language,Feng Xiang,a non-Christian translator,retranslated the Bible.The differences between these two versions of the Bible have drawn wide attention and discussion in the academia.To evaluate different translation versions of the same work objectively,it is necessary to use a set of objective and scientific methods of analysis and evaluation.It is inappropriate to analyze and evaluate a text subjectively and arbitrarily.To establish an objective scientific analysis and evaluation method,it is necessary for us to obtain from linguistic theories and translation theories.Cognitive linguistics believes that language is a tool for mankind to understand the world.At the same time,people's deeper understanding of the world will promote the development of language.Therefore,the translator's cognitive ability will affect his interpretation of the source work and the creation of the translation.And the translator's cognitive ability is mainly composed of the translator's translation purpose,knowledge structure and language competence.Based on this,we believe that these three factors are the main reasons leading to differences in translation.Based on this understanding,this thesis mainly analyzes the translation of CUV and Feng Xiang' s version from translator's purpose of translation,knowledge structure and language competence,exemplifying that these three elements are the main factors that lead to the differences in different translation versions.The CUV's translators are American missionaries and the purpose of their translation is to spread Christianity.Therefore,in order to make the spread of religious culture more smoothly,the translation breaks the formal equivalence of the original and uses the concept familiar to the Chinese people to convey the meaning of the original text.Missionaries' identities mean that their religious knowledge is richer than most non-religious people.Therefore,they are capable of creating many new religious words in the translation to express the religious connotation;because of the fact that missionaries' native language is not Chinese,some of their language expressions are easily influenced by English thinking pattern.Therefore,some sentences in the CUV do not conform to the Chinese language usage habit.Feng Xiang's translation of the Bible is only to discover its literary value,so he used a large number of annotations,which provided convenience for the non Christians readers who do not understand the background of Christian.Feng Xiang,who is a non-Christian,fails to bear the same feelings of Christians to translate some religious terms properly.However,as a writer,he translated the Bible with his deep knowledge in literary.Therefore,his translation language is more vivid.This analysis may not be perfect.The author just wants to explore a more objective and scientific method of analyzing different translation versions of the same work according to cognitive linguistic view on translation.There are still many deficiencies in this thesis,which need to be improved.Any criticism and suggestions are appreciated.
