Study Of Implicit Cohesion Of Multimodal Discourse In Language Competition Program

Multimodal discourse refers to use the auditive,visual,tactile,olfactory and other modalities to communicate with the words,images,sounds,movements,smell and so on.The acquisition of these perceptual channels results in different modals of communication,such as visual modality,auditive modality,tactile modality,olfactory modality and so on.Multimodal discourse and verbal symbol have participated in the construction of meaning together in communication.Implicit cohesion,as a device of discourse cohesion,plays an important role in promoting the realization of textual functions.This paper takes I am a Speaker,a competition program as a corpus,and studies the implicit cohesion in the framework of multimodal discourse and then explores what are the effects of implicit cohesion of multimodal discourse in language competition program.First of all,this paper attempts to categorize the types of multimodal discourses involved in I am a Speaker by probing into this language competition program,including auditive modality,visual modality,tactile modality,and olfactory modality.Then,it analyzes different implicit cohesive devices within the framework of different types of modal discourses by case study.The cohesion of auditive modality is achieved by changing the speed and intonation of speaker,acceptable pauses,and changing background music.The cohesion of visual modality is achieved through the use of body language and changing the color of the stage,light and so on.And the cohesion of tactile modality is achieved through physical contact such as hug,handshakes and so on.The cohesion of olfactory modality is achieved by emitting and changing smell.Finally,this paper tends to explore the language effects of implicit cohesion of multimodal discourse in language competition program.Through the case study,the result shows that the effects of the implicit cohesive device of multimodal discourse embodies in the interpretation of speech content and the presentation of speech effect.About the interpretation of speech content,these cohesive devices are used to the explanation of speech theme,prevention of content interruption,and the implication of speech topic shift.And about the presentation of speech effect,these cohesive devices are used to enlighten the thinking,to set the atmosphere,and to promote the emotional resonance between the speaker and audience.Through the study of the multimodal discourse of I am a Speaker,this paper analyzes how the implicit cohesive devices of different types of multimodal discourses are realized and knows how these cohesive devices are applied in the language competition program.Then,this paper further studies how the speaker uses the implicit cohesive device to achieve the speech purpose so as to realize the effects and function of the speech,help the audience to better understand the speech content.So this paper is of some theoretical significance and practical value to the speech of language competition program.
