C-E Translation Of Dialect In Vicissitude Of Two Generations

The translating project selects a piece of local literature work written by Zhou Ge.The author of the novel chosen the first chapter to translate.Source text describes a story that people in Chengdu make arduous effort to start their business.The language of the novel is vulgar and humorous.And dialect is the most prominent phenomenon in source text,so this paper selects dialect as a entry point to explore and study its translating principles and strategies in dialectal translation.Firstly,a clear definition is given in Chapter One,that is,dialect refers to a kind of linguistic variant in a certain region,and it is classified into regional dialect and social dialect.Secondly,dialect is with prominent regional flavor and cultural connotation,and possess special literary function when it is used in literary works,that are,depicting character's personality,restoring context and creating atmosphere.In the process of translation,the translator should represent the literary function of dialect as much as possible.Then the thesis explore the translating principle of dialectal translation: fidelity principle,skopos principle and simplicity principle.Finally,under the guidance of translating principle,the thesis summarizes the translating strategies in translating dialect.To reappear the style of source text and literary function of dialect,the translator of source text mainly adopts two kinds of strategies: foreignization and domestication.On the one hand,foreignization strategy has the function to spread the original flavor of source text,then the translator used specific translating methods such as literal translation,transliteration and annotation to deal with the problem.One the other hand,considering the readability of translating version,the translator choose to give up or partially give up the original style of source text by adopting domestication strategy to deal with the problem,such as free translation,recreation and omission.Through studying the translation of dialect,the thesis draws the conclusion as follow: in the process of translating dialect,translator should use all kinds of translating strategy which is suitable for translating dialect to reach a balance between source text and translating version.By studying the dialectal translation in rural novel Vicissitude of Two Generations,the author wishes that this paper can provide some inspiration for other local literary translation.
