A Report On The Translation Of The Dark Aspect Of History (Excerpt)

As an important literary genre,prose,with high cultural and aesthetic values,plays a vital role in the history of Chinese literature.The translation of Chinese prose works is conducive to the promotion and dissemination of Chinese culture,so the importance of prose translation can be seen;however,prose translation is challenging because of its loose form and strong differences between Chinese and Western cultures.In this report,the translator chooses a work named The Dark Aspect of History with rich Chinese history and human culture,which is placed as a chapter of Chinese writer Yu Qiuyu's prose collection Notes From Mountain Home,as the material for this translation practice,to explore how to reproduce the literary value and artistic charm of the original work and enhance the readability of prose translation.Based on the text analysis,the translator adopts Discourse Analysis Theory as a guiding theory to analyze difficulties in this prose translation.The research object of Discourse Analysis Theory includes the language system,the intra-linguistic factors and the extra-linguistic factors,which can help the translator comprehensively to guide the translation process.Through analyzing the text,the translator noticed that the text language represents the features of the plainness and colloquialism.The three aspects of Discourse Analysis Theory,which includes cohesion and coherence,logical relationship and cultural context,guide the translator to solve these problems,so that the translated text can not only convey the information and style of the original text accurately,but also be easily accepted by the target readers.This translation practice report reproduces the beauty of content and style of prose through many effective translation techniques and strategies,like omission,addition and domestication.And the translator hopes that her deep reflection on this translation practice report can provide references for prose translation practice.
