A Tentative Study On Factors Determining Text Coherence And Its Application In E-C Translation

Since the beginning of 21^st century, translation studies has drawn a lot upon the research results of the related disciplines, which enable us to view and summarize translation studies and practice from different perspectives. What's more, it has helped to enrich and expand the academic field of translation studies. Of all these disciplines that contribute to translation studies, text linguistics (discourse analysis) is a comparatively new branch of learning that has gain momentum in its development since 1960s. Many scholars both at home and abroad, like M.A. K .Halliday&R. Hasan, G Brown, Widdowson, Zhang Delu, Hu Zhuanglin, have made their due contribution to the research and development of text linguistics and above all, its application in translation studies. In recent two decades, scholars of linguistic field have attached more and more importance to text coherence, which is a decisive factor in distinguishing a text from a non-text.This author, on the basis of Zhang Delu's view on the factors determining text coherence, believes that both inner factors and outer factors of a text play crucial roles in organizing a coherent text. This thesis analyzes in a detailed manner the factors of text coherence and their applications in translation process illustrated with the examples from Wuthering Heights and three Chinese versions.In conclusion, this thesis states that in the entire process of translation, both the correct comprehension of the source text and appropriate expression in the target language depend on the understanding of cohesive devices and specific situational and cultural context as three main factors determining text coherence.
