Natural number bias refers to the tendency to inappropriately apply natural number properties when reasoning about mathematical problems.Previous research suggested that intuitive processes could be the source of natural number bias. Some researchers made an attempt to explain the bias within dual-processing theory. There is no research can explain the cognitive mechanism undering the phenomenon of natural number bias.In the present study,we based on the Inhibitory Control Model, trying to prove the important role of inhibition in arithmetic operations on rational numbers. To identify our standpoint,In the pre-Research of this study, the difference of natural number bias between the Chinese students and foreign student was discussed by the same paper and pencil test.Research 1 explores the differences between the error rate and response time of natural number operation and rational number operation in Chinese students. In Research 2,we use the Negative Priming paradigm to provide evidence that inhibition processes are involved in the situations when participants solve arithmetical operations problem. The logice of Negative Priming paradigm is: if a intuitive strategy is inhibited in rational number task(prime item)and this strategy is needed in the following item(probe item),the respond time will be longer than the condition in which a prime item is irrelevant. This study use arithmetical operations task as experimental materials. The experimental data was taken from 8th graders,10 th graders and adults.Research 3 uses the event-related potential technique to figure out the brain mechanism in natural number bias.Pre-Research found that Chinese students performed better under this task, and were less affected by natural number deviation than foreign students. In Research 1,the natural number bias was found in rational number operation task. The reaction time of rational number operation problem is longer than the reaction time of natural number operation problem. And it is easier to make mistake in rational number operation problem.Research 2 found that, students need to inhibit the expression of intuitive natural number rules, when the answer of rational number operation problem is correct.Research 3 found that rational number task activated a larger P2 and P3 amplitude,it indicates that participants need to suppress participation when doing rational numbers.
