Translation is not only the transmission of information from one language to another language, but also the spread of culture. With the rapid development of economy, the international community pays much more attention to Chinese culture, and more scholars' attention is attracted by C-E literary translation. Many expressions of folk language in Mo Yan's Chinese version Shengsi Pilao vividly show the unique cultural images in rural China. With his translation skills, the famous translator Goldblatt skillfully preserves those unique cultural elements and vividly conveys them to the target language readers in his English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.Meanwhile, these translation strategies and methods make contributions to the outreach of Chinese culture.Under the guidance of relevance theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson, this thesis chooses Goldblatt's English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out to analyze what strategies and methods Goldblatt adopted to deal with those expressions of folk language.Through this analysis, this thesis aims to analyze the strategies and methods in C-E translation of folk language the translator should adopt. In this process of analyzing, theoretical elaborations are combined with case studies, all the typical examples are collected by hand, and then those examples are analyzed under the guidance of relevance theory. Finally, the conclusion can be made.In the process of C-E translation of folk language, the translator should adopt different translation strategies and methods to get optimal relevance. That's,the aim of the translator is to ensure the target language readers to get the similar contextual effects to the source language readers. The conclusion is as follow:(1)with their cognitive context, the target language readers can infer the cultural connotation, the translator should adopt literal translation method and foreignization strategy;(2)due to different cognitive context and cultural background, the target language readers can't infer the true connotation of the source text,so the translator should adopt free translation and domestication strategy to compensate the cultural default in order to enable the targetlanguage readers to gain enough contextual effects without any unnecessary processing effort;(3)if the words or expressions have double meanings, and the method of transliteration just can convey the surface meaning, but can't make the implication clear. At this time, the translator should adopt the method of transliteration plus annotation to enable the target language readers to adequately understand the implication without any unnecessary process effort.
