Xu Zhongou is one of the black-and-white woodcut printmakers who became famous in Sichuan printmaking circle in his early years,and always maintains high creative enthusiasm in domestic printmaking circle.He passes on the traditional black-and-white woodcut printmaking techniques,meanwhile he also pursued innovation of woodcut printmaking and the different way of expression.He is also one of the few woodcut printmakers in China who has his own thought of western abstract art and oriental image aesthetics.Xu Zhongou learned traditional black-and-white woodcut prints,but his creations are different from the traditional ones.From 1978 to 2013,his woodcut prints have gone through three stages in artistic thought: realism,symbolism and abstractionism,and the expression of woodcut prints artistic language has realized a leap from concrete to abstract.He dares to make exploration and innovations.His admiration for Chinese traditional culture is fully reflected in his artistic works.Through constant exploration and innovation,Xu Zhongou finally has developed his unique style of artistic creation.This paper tries to research the application of abstract graphics in Xu Zhongou's woodcut creation by analyzing his works in abstract stage.Meanwhile,by comparison his woodcut works and other representative woodcut printers in Sichuan from the aspect of artistic style,we get a better understanding of the imagery aesthetics and the innovation of language expression in woodcut creation.And it can not only trigger viewer's thinking about abstract graphic language,but also provide a possibility for the artists to create woodcut.
