The development of spatial narrative in China has gradually built up a system, and it has made it possible to apply space theory to literary criticism. With space theory as the starting point to interpret some narrative texts has become a hot topic in the field of spatial narrative research. In recent years, the rereading of Natsume Soseki has aroused the attention of the academic community to the text Sanshiro which was not valued before. The novel has a rich spatial characteristics both in the content and structure.Spatial narrative is focusing on the spatial narrative of the novel to explore its dynamic narrative meaning.Based on the method of textual reading, the spatial narrative research on Sanshiro can not only discover the deep connotation of the text to change the "misreading",but also make up for the shortcomings of the research in this field.According to the spatial narrative theory, this paper divides the space in the novel into three categories: geophysical space, social cultural space and text space. The geophysical space presented in the novel firstly represented by the train symbol,it reveals the influence of space on the relationship between the individual and the other and the individual’s examination of the self.Secondly, the purpose of the scene reveals the function of space for shaping the image of the characters, promoting the development of the plot, and deepening the theme of the work.Thirdly, taking the University of Tokyo as an example to reveal the impact of knowledge space on the fate of characters and the storyline. Finally, cutting from the character’s route reveals the reshaping significance of the railway to the city map,and echoes the historical narrative with the brushstroke of literature. In the social and cultural space, firstly it reflects the game between the Western civilizations in the Middle East, and the resulting social situation in the social reform process represented by the urban-rural integration, the rebellion of values, the intertwined tradition and modernity, which directly or indirectly reveals the novel’s reflective theme of modernity.Secondly, focusing on female gender space,it mirrors the significance of modernization reform for female’s oppression and enlightenment through the awakening of female’s living dilemma and subjectivity. The generation of the text space of the novel is related to the use of narrative techniques. The dual narrative perspective constructs the distance between the inside and the outside of the story. The juxtaposition breaks off the flow of time and strengthens the spatiality.Repeated narratives render the emotional psychological space inside the text.Image narrative enables the grafting of time art and space art, creating a narrative fragment with rich picture, and making spatial images possible for narrative. In short, the combination of Sanshiro and spatial narrative not only provides a new perspective and new method for text rereading, but also explores the explanatory power and applicability of spatial narrative in the interpretation.
