A Study Of Addition And Deletion From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

Guided by communicative translation,this study analyzes addition and deletion methods adopted during the translation of the energy report.It explores how the translator uses addition and deletion translation methods to make TT more loyal and fluent,so that the function of information transmission and natural equivalence can be achieved.The translation project is excerpted from Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2017.It is an informative text and contains some technical terms.The content is expressed in an objective,formal and logical manner.The frequent use of conjunctions and prepositions builds a close relationship among its words and constitutes some longer sentences.Therefore,how to extract its original information and logical relationship accurately and how to reproduce the style of the source language text become the major difficulties during translation.Based on this translation project,this study aims to analyze addition and deletion translation methods used and explores how to use this two methods to realize accuracy,logicality and completeness of the target texts.The research ideas are as follows: Firstly,according to the fundamental function of informative text and communicative translation theory,faithfulness and expressiveness were chosen as primary translation principles.Secondly,the addition and deletion methods used in the project were marked and then summarized into different categories on the basis of previous studies.Finally,based on the differences between English and Chinese languages,the reasons and effects of adopting addition and deletion methods in this project were analyzed from the perspective of communicative translation.Built on the analysis of specific cases,the study has three major findings: Firstly,when the translator fails to express the essence of the source text if he/she copy the original words and syntax,he/she can add some words to clarify the implicit or omitted information in ST according to the faithfulness and expressiveness principles,making the target text easier to understand.Secondly,when the ST has redundant or empty words which may affect the readability of the TT,the translator can delete the redundancy and unnecessary words to make the TT more concise and fluent.In addition,when there exists causal relationship between the Subject and the Object in some simple sentence,the translator can combine addition and deletion methods by adding logical conjunctions and deleting the verb so as to change the long sentences into shorter causal complex sentences,making readers have a better understanding of the original texts.To make the TT more loyal and expressive,the translator should try to use idiomaticity,collocation or usage that are familiar to the target readers by adding or deleting some words.In this way,he/she can avoid some problems like mistranslation,vagueness and poor readability to have a better communicative effect.
