This report is based on the translation of "2017 BBALLBREAKDOWN Top 50",a basketball commentary published on bballbreakdown.com.The commentary is featured by its interesting and vivid language with a great number of distinctly lively metaphors.Considering the particular style of basketball commentaries and the differences between English and Chinese languages and cultures,the translation of these metaphors is one of the most difficult points for a translator.In this case,Peter Newmark's theory on communicative translation,which advocates the importance of conveying messages in ST,may provide inspiration on the translation of metaphors in a sports commentary.Under the guidance of the theory of Communicative Translation,especially its principle of loyal translation,the thesis has explored desirable translation methods for metaphors by giving priority to readers' reception of TT,and focusing on the interpretation of images and the optimization of the target language.From the translation practice,two specific translation methods are put forward,namely image preservation and image conversion.The former can be applied when the preservation of the images in TT will not change the meaning of ST.The latter can come into use when the images in ST have different connotations or even do not exist in TT,thus it is more desirable to convert those images into new images that have similar connotative meanings in TT.To further optimize the translation,the use of idioms in TT is emphasized to improve the quality of translation.By applying these methods,translators can create more concise and idiomatic translations,largely enhancing the readability of TT.
