Since the middle of 19 th century, with the increasingly close exchanges between Western and Chinese, more and more Westerners began to learn Chinese and wrote Chinese textbooks. Some of these Chinese textbooks selected and adapted many China ancient times literature. The Chinese Language and How to Learn It which written by the British diplomat called Walter C.Hillier is a typical example. In this Chinese textbook,Walter C.Hillier chose and adapted 13 stories from a China ancient times literature called Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio. In this paper,I studied these adapted stories. From three aspects of addition, rewriting and deletion,I analyzed these adaptation features of Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio on The Chinese Language and How to Learn It from adding comprehensively and systematically. And I found that the adaptation of Walter C.Hillier is practical and suitable for Chinese learning, the stories in there are moving and logical. And it conforms with the religion, culture and literary tradition of Westerners. But,there are also some errors and improper places during the adaptation.Through the study of the adaptation of Walter C.Hillier, when adapting Chinese ancient times literatures in Chinese textbooks,we should think about learners' thinking and reading habits, respecting their cultural values, paying attention to the practicality of the textbooks,as appropriate,to adapt the stories.
