Kazuo Ishiguro is one of the most influential writers in England. He has created seven novels so far, each of them is applauded with high recognition, especially The Remains of the Day,which wins the Booker Prize in 1989.At home and abroad, numerous scholars have interpreted the novel from various literary theories, such as new historicism, trauma theory and post colonialism, etc. However, few explore gazes in the novel. Therefore, this thesis based on Sartre's and Michel Foucault's gaze theory intends to discuss Butler Stevens' s self-alienation as the gazed and his identity construction as the gazer through traveling. The study of gaze theory is of great value. In the society where everyone can be both the gazed and the gazer, only through making a good use of gaze can one get rid of the bondage of being gazed and self-alienation,and thus constructing one's identity.
