The research of family language policy is one of the most popular research topics in the fields of applied linguistics and sociolinguistics.Scholars abroad have studied the family language policy from different angles,and achieved fruitful results in the enquiry.However,the domestic research on family language policy is mainly draw into the introduction to the abroad research achievement.The empirical study on family language policy in China is relatively less than the studies abroad,and there is scarce relevant research on English learning of Chinese children.According to the author's long-time teaching experience,junior-grade pupils' English learning is largely depended on their parents' family language policy.Therefore,based on the previous research results on family language policy,having taken the junior-grade pupils from three primary schools in Panlong district of Kunming,Yunnan Province,as the research objects,the thesis uses literature research,questionnaire survey,interview,observation and other research methods to investigate the influence and effect of family language policy on English learning of junior-grade pupils.The study has found that,in Chinse cities,family language policy has a great influence on English learning of junior-grade pupils,whose parents have very strong ideology on their children's English learning.On the other hand,the parents also have the strict plans or management,with which they would allow their children participate in a variety of English learning activities.The study has also found that besides parents' attention,management,supervision or intervention of their children's English learning,their language level,education level,family living places or environments also affect their children's interest and success in learning English.In addition,it is also found in the study that parents' family language policies not only affect children's English learning,but also affect their learning of other languages,such as mother tongue and standard Chinese(Putonghua).The above research results indicate that family language policy plays an important role in the English learning of urban junior-grades pupils.It also shows that schools,families and society have different roles and functions in the process of junior-grade pupils' education.Families are the first classes of pupils,and parents are their first teachers.Family education is the cornerstone of the whole educational process of students.This study is a new attempt of family language policy to the research of English teaching in primary schools in China.The attempt not only reveals the status and importance of family language policy in the English learning of junior-grade pupils in China's cities,but also provides a new way of thinking for the research of English teaching in primary schools in China.This study also provides enlightenment for Chinese children's mother tongue learning and inheritance as well as other language learning studies.Due to the limitations of time and the author's own ability,there are many shortcomings in this study.As an English teacher,the author will continue to make efforts and improvements in future study and research.
