The Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2011 Edition)stipulates the task of English teaching at the basic stage as “arousing and cultivating students' interest in learning English,helping students to establish self-confidence,forming good learning habits and effective learning strategies,and developing ability of independent learning and spirit of teamwork cooperation.” The Standard sets firstlevel and second-level goals for lower-grade pupils.Both of them aim at arousing pupils' interests towards English language through various teaching activities.Primary school students at lower grades usually range from 6 to 8 years old.These students are more restless,fun-loving,and curious to fresh objects;as to learning,they are quite distinct from those at higher grades in such five aspects as learning motivation,cognitive competence,memory capacity,form of thinking,and concentration.On the basis of analyzing the Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards and the distinctive features of the lower-grade students' learning strategies,this study applies the theories of Krashen's of SLA and Piaget's Cognitive Development to construe its theoretical framework.In methodology,literature review,case study,questionnaire,and interviewing are integrated to examine the practices of teaching design for lower-grade pupils' English lessons.An experiment is conducted empirically in this research.Based on the scores of experimental group and control group,data are obtained from three tests both before and after experiment.With the aid of SPSS19.0,an Independent-samples T test is applied and its result demonstrates a significant difference of academic performances between the experimental group and the control group.That indicates one-term-long teaching experiment,which features innovative teaching design based on lower-graded pupils' learning characters,exerts a positive effect to improve students' English competence.The survey through Questionnaire for Teachers finds out that each specific teaching design that based on pupils' learning characters rates higher than 4.5 points in terms of objective completion,which reveals the high effectiveness of the class teaching practices that adopt teaching designs based on pupils' learning characters.Furthermore,the interviews show that a five-phased strategy is applied among all instructors when they organize the activities of teaching and evaluation.Through the Questionnaire for Students,another survey is done in the experimental group.89.47% of pupils said they are interested in English lessons and 92.11% of them love to have English lessons.To sum up,it can be concluded that English lessons that are based on the learning characteristics of lower-grade pupils can arouse their interest,motivate their class participation,enhance their affection and improve their learning efficiency.
