Based on the translation of "Those Golden Nights",the present thesis discusses the application of the theory of Fusion of Horizons in Chinese idiom translation.Fusion of Horizons considers translation as a process of understanding and interpretation. It proposes that there are two horizons in literary translation-the author horizon and the reader horizon. They respectively represent the same or different understanding produced on the part of the author and readers when they are writing or reading the same text on account of the influence of different culture, religion and other external factors. In the process of Chinese idioms translation, the degree of fusion can also reflect the level of a translator.Fusion of Horizons puts forward three basic modes of horizon fusion:partial fusion, complete fusion and inclusion fusion. With the application of the Fusion of Horizons, the present thesis lists a variety of translation strategies in the translation of Chinese idioms. In the first place, the author makes an in-depth analysis of the specific content of the theory of Fusion of Horizons, introduces the modes and basic processes of Fusion of Horizons and the guiding significance of Fusion of Horizons in Chinese idiom translation. This paper discusses the choice of translation strategies under different modes of Fusion of Horizons. The author uses five translation strategies, including borrowing, literal translation, liberal translation, addition and omission to make the horizons of Chinese idioms reproduced to the maximum extent in the translation.Of these strategies, borrowing can reproduce the Chinese idioms' meaning to the greatest extent.Literal translation and liberal translation are respectively used to deal with the idioms that share the same or different meaning and usage in Chinese and English.Addition and omission are usually used to retain the original meaning of Chinese idioms by making an additional interpretation or by omitting some redundant words. The thesis tries to prove that the Fusion of Horizons enables translators to unify the two horizons with the different choices of translation strategies,to meet the needs of the target language readers as well as to restore the original features.
