| This thesis attempts to study the translation of terminologies with Chinese characteristics from the perspective of memetics.Based on Chesterman’s translation norms, the thesis explores how to understand the translation process and product at the linguistic and cultural level so as to better translate terminologies with Chinese characteristic. With the acceleration of globalization, the translation of terminologies with Chinese characteristic plays an increasingly important role in spreading Chinese cultural information. As an effective carrier for the transmission of cultural information, translation of terminologies with Chinese characteristics has an immeasurable impact on shaping the image of China. In December 2017,the "Corpus for Standardized Translation of Terminologies with Chinese Characteristics" was jointly released by China International Publishing Group and China Academy of Translation. With various forms of contents being the carrier of Chinese information, the corpus serves the establishment of the national discourse system and exchanges of Chinese culture in the international community, which also marks a new era for the output of Chinese cultures. However,at present, domestic research on the translation of terminologies with Chinese characteristics is limited, and few studies have carried out on the corpus, thus providing an opportunity for this thesis. The thesis takes memetics as its theory, transmission of language and cultural information as its orientation, and bi-lingual texts from the terminology corpus as its source of analysis.According to expectancy norm and professional norm proposed by Chesterman, translation is both a product meme and a process meme, but the product meme regulates the process meme quite often.Terminologies with Chinese characteristics are a kind of carriers for the Chinese culture, with its features reflected in both its language traditions and a variety of cultural connotations. As thus,on the one hand, translators are required to consider the linguistic features of terminologies with Chinese characteristics, meet the expectations of the target readership, and convey the key information in an appropriate and accurate way;on the other hand, they should also integrate the four non-linguistic features,nation-related,contemporary,practical and systematic, and formulate translated texts reasonably and effectively. This thesis holds that the translation of terminologies with Chinese characteristics can be conducted around thetransmission of linguistic memes and cultural memes,in a way that conforms to the expectancy norm and the professional norm. |
