The relationship between language and mind is an important issue in the history of philosophy. The answer to this question has formed a view of mind in respect of universal language which expressed the mind by language. After thousands of years of development,in the 17th Century, this view of mind in respect of universal language changed from expressing the mind in natural language to expressing the mind in universal language.Leibniz made an important contribution to this turn.He creatively proposed to represent the mind with the symbolic universal language of rationality, and formed the Internalist view of mind in respect of universal language, which had an important impact on the development of Mathematical Logic and Artificial Intelligence.Leibniz's view of mind in respect of universal language was influenced by the ideological trend of unambiguous expression in the 17th Century.Based on induction and observation, the empiricist Bacon initiated the pursuit of Universal Language, which was criticized by rationalism.Rationalists believed that the induction of experience necessarily required the intervention of feeling, because feeling couldn't guarantee the accuracy of language,so the concept generated by feeling was unreasonable as a rational thinking tool.Leibniz,as the representative of rationalism, put forward the way of representing the mind by the symbolic universal language, and formed the rational internalist view of language and mind under the influence of the ideas since Plato, the universal algebra of Descartes and the calculable thinking of Hobbes.Leibniz's view of mind in respect of universal language held that the structure of language was in the mind, and the structure of language that was in the mind could be symbolized by character and numbers, and on the basis of symbolization, the alphabet of human thoughts can be formed,so as to realize the unambiguous expression of thoughts. This view of mind in respect of universal language has the feature of Internalism,Symbolism,Rationalism and Reductionism.Leibniz's view of mind in respect of universal language pioneering the representation of mind in rational symbolic language, which had an important impact on Chomsky's generative grammar, and also on the development of Internalist Epistemology,Computational view of mind in respect of universal language and Artificial Intelligence. However, due to the limitation of rationality, the fuzziness of the scope of mind, and the incompleteness of the alphabet of human thought, this view of mind in respect of universal language is inevitably criticized by Empiricism and later view of mind in respect of universal language.
