Research On The Vicissitudes Of Heroine's Image In Cultural Construction By Wide Sargasso Sea From The Perspective Of Polysystem Theory

The use of translation strategies of translators insinuates the certain historical and cultural background at their time.If a researcher only focuses on translated text literally,neglecting other factors that may affect translation,it is rather hard to get an appropriate and objective assessment on translated text itself.The Israeli scholar Even-Zohar came up with the polysystem theory,leading the translation research into cultural level.Based on this theory,the position of translated literature in polysystem in translator's time has a strong influence on the translation strategy selection.With the instruction of Polysystem theory,this thesis is about to have a comparative study on the five Chinese versions from different periods of Wide Sargasso Sea,which respectively are Wang Jiaxiang's version in 1986,Ding Song's version in 1992,Chen liangting's version in 1995,Zheng Zhihui's version in 2002 and Fang Jun's version in 2011.And there will be a text illustrating analysis made on the five translated versions,further to explore the translation strategies adopted by the main five translators and see how the strategies impact the cultural constructions of the West Indies in their translations.According to Polysystem,the essay is aimed for analyzing the positions of translated literature within literary polysystem in five translators' times,and discussing the reason why the five translators apply different translation strategies.It is followed by the analysis of how the protagonist's image change in these five Chinese versions.It can be told that Wang Jiaxiang prefers to use foreignization,but somehow meticulously dealing with those traditional words and expressions to comply with Chinese culture.So domestication adoption is also obvious in her interpretation because of that specific age.While Chen Liangting and Liu Wenlan tend to employ direct translation.Nevertheless,Zheng Zhihui together with editor Zhu Hong make the full use of translator's intervention totally free interpretation.While as to Fang Jun and Lv Jinglian,regardless of a large scale of foreignization method adoption,the whole keynote inclines to making a conversion from foreignization to domestication in line with the turn point of Chinese culture in some ways.All in all,from these translated Chinese versions,we can get a comprehensive understanding of Antoinette's image,which varies in different translators under different backgrounds.We witness the heroine Antoinette from the beginning submissive,doll-like,maniac static and flat image to an innocent,courageous,thoughtful and daring to love and hate,dynamic and rounded one.It testifies that translators' strategy selection does impact the image vicissitudes of the protagonist Antoinette.
