With the acceleration of the pace of globalization by Chinese enterprises in the new era,Latin America and the Caribbean(hereinafter referred to as “Latin America”)has played an increasingly important role in China's overall diplomatic layout, and relations between China and Latin America have maintained a good development trend. At the same time,Chinese academic circles are paying more attention to regional country studies.Country studies on Latin America can play a positive role in promoting the implementation of “the Belt and Road Initiative” in the region. The translation of General History of the Caribbean is helpful to deepen the understanding of the Caribbean region in Chinese academic circles. This translation project is excerpted from Chapter Nine of General History of the Caribbean: Volume VI written by Australian historian Higman. This chapter is a review of the past relevant historical documents in the Caribbean.Under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory, combining specific cases, the translator makes an analysis of the source text in the lexical and syntactic levels, and achieves the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text by using appropriate translation methods and strategies. In the lexical level, the translator adopts transliteration, annotation and extension. In the syntactic level, the translator adopts conversion, inversion, amplification and negation. The above translation methods and strategies make the target readers and the source readers have an equivalent acceptance of the work.
