A Report On The Translation Of The Oxford History Of Literary Translation In English:Volume 2 (Excerpts)

This report is a review on the translation of three sections of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English:Volume 2,namely,the General Editors' Foreword,the Preface and The Corpus of Translations and their Place in the Literary and Cultural World,1550-1660,written by Gordon Braden,Robert Cummings and Stuart Gillespie.The General Editors' Foreword relates the situation of the history of translation and the contributions during this time this book was written;the Preface shows the Structure of volume 2,the Scope,the Bibliography and Referencing,and other Conventions of Presentation and Acknowledgements;The Corpus of Translations and their Place in the Literary and Cultural World presents five parts,including an overview,pedagogical uses of translation,translation and the English language,translation and religious belief,and translation and literary innovation.On the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,this translation report adopts the literal translation,linear translation,reversing translation,restructuring translation,and the literal translation with notes and other methods.During the process of the translation,the author considers the factors of lexical level,syntactic level,textual level as well as stylistic level so as to make the translated version natural and equivalent as much as possible by using the advantages of the target language.The main purpose of this report is to discuss how to solve the problems and difficulties by employing effective translation strategies,so as to improve the accuracy,conventionality,and accessibility of the translated text.Meanwhile,the writing of this translation report aims at serving as a valuable reference for the translators who want to translate similar English texts as well as encouraging more scholars to dedicate to the translation practice and study of the history of English translation.
