A Report On The Translation Of The Oxford History Of Literary Translation In English(Chapter 5-6,Volume 2)

This report focuses on the E-C translation process of Chapter(5-6)of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English(Volume 2)written by Gordon,Braden,Robert,Cummings&Stuart,and Gillespie,published in 2010,which mainly surveys the background,scope,and implications of literary translation in English from 1550 to 1660.This book plays an important role in the study of literary translation in English and is helpful for readers to know about the process of literary translation in English.The two chapters the author translated is about the translation history of pastorals,idylls and dramas at that time with the genres of narration,argumentation and a lot of early-modern English words.Taking the language features of the source text into consideration,Eugene A.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory is chosen by the author as the principle of this translation report to achieve"the Closest Natural Equivalence" as much as possible.This translation report mainly includes five parts:the first part is a brief introduction to the translation project,including text source,text introduction,and text significance;the second part is pre-translation process,including study of translation text,researching and reading of the parallel texts as well as related articles,and team work;the third part introduces Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory;the fourth part is the case studies,which introduces the translation methods from the levels of words,sentences and text features respectively;in the fifth part,the author summarizes the experience and deficiency in translation practice,and points out suggestions for future improvement.On the macro guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,the literal translation,literal translation with notes,free translation,substitution and other translation methods has been adopted by this translation report.The author not only weighs language factors,but also cultural factors to make the translation appropriate,natural,and equivalent as far as possible by taking advantages of target language.Therefore,it is hoped that this translation and report are helpful for future translation and studies on such books by foreign language.
