A Study Of The English Translation Strategies Of China And The World Trade Organization From The Perspective Of Nord's Functionalism

Since China' accession to the World Trade Organization(WTO)in 2001,China's economic and political status has been significantly improved.On June 28,2018,against the backdrop of western countries accusing China of “economic aggression”,China released the white paper China and the World Trade Organization,aiming to justify itself with facts and figures.As official political texts,white papers,if translated properly,help to shape our national image and convey our national policies.Thus,the strategies applied in the translation of the white papers are worth researchers' attention.Based on Christiane Nord's Functionalism,this thesis analyzes and evaluates the strategies used to translate China and the World Trade Organization.At the lexical level,the author analyzes the translation strategies of words with Chinese characteristics,high-frequency collocation words and four-character idioms in the white paper.It is found that the translator usually adopts literal translation,free translation,conversion and ellipsis.At the syntactical level,this thesis analyzes the strategies used to translate non-subject sentences and long and complex sentences.When translating non-subject sentences,the translator usually uses three methods:using non-finite verbs as the subjects,addition and using the passive voice.In translating long and complex sentences,division,addition,conversion and linear interpretation are used.The thesis also explores the strategies used in the translations of simile,metaphor,repetition,parallelism and other figures of speech in the source text.It is found that the translator adopts literal translation,free translation and omission.The translator uses a variety of translation strategies to make the target text concise and accurate,and to ensure the readability and accuracy of the translation.It is hoped that the translation strategies discussed in this thesis can shed light on the future translation of Chinese government's white papers and the translation research.
