In the early stages of English literacy learning,primary school students in China are greatly affected by the negative transfer of Chinese learning: some students follow the learning method of Chinese characters,and some students use Pinyin to read and write.Due to the lack of knowledge of English spellings and writing,it is difficult for them to write the words correctly or read the text independently.In recent years,there has been a growing call for improving students' literacy skills in elementary school.Phonics projects based on improving literacy skills have been developed abroad for many years.The most widely used phonics method in foreign countries nowadays is Systematic Synthetic Phonics.However,is the Systematic Synthetic Phonics method suitable for primary school English teaching in China? Can this method promote the development of students' word spelling,spelling and reading comprehension effectively?The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of Systematic Synthetic Phonics teaching on the English word reading,word spelling and text comprehension of the third grade primary school students whose mother tongue is Chinese.Two classes participated in this experiment,one as an experimental class taught by Systematic Synthetic Phonics three times a week,one as a control class taught according to conventional teaching methods.Before the experiment,the pretest analysis was carried out on the experimental class and the control class,and it was found that there was no significant difference in reading,spelling and reading ability between the two classes.After 16 weeks of teaching experiments,the two classes were tested among English word reading,English word spelling and text reading comprehension again.The post-test results show that the experimental class is better than the control class in the three aspects.Independent sample t-test was conducted and the results of the two classes are significantly different.The conclusions fully show that Systematic Synthetic Phonics teaching can improve pupils' word reading,word spelling and reading comprehension ability significantly.Based on the phonetic correspondence teaching of small units,Systematic Synthetic Phonics help learners who learn English as a foreign language read independently.
