| English,as a universal language,has been paid more and more attention.China’s Ministry of Education stipulates that junior middle school students should overcome the obstacles to learn new words and use the words correctly and stay learning interest and learning confidence.While when Junior One students encounter new words,they can not pronounce the words according to International Phonetic Symbols or spelling rules.At home and abroad,phonics is widely applied in primary school and preschool children’s English learning.Phonics combines the form and sounds of words,which is in line with Chinese students’ learning habit and can promote students’ pronunciation and spelling.On basis of language transfer theory,information processing theory and critical period hypothesis,this paper is to study whether phonics training can improve the word reading and word spelling of junior middle school students.Therefore,the major research questions of this thesis are as follows: 1.Does phonics have positive effect on word reading ability of junior middle school students?2.Does phonics have positive effect on word spelling ability of junior middle school students? 3.Does phonics have positive effect on English learning interest of junior middle school students? 4.Does phonics have positive effect on English learning confidence of junior middle school students?84 Junior one students,from Mianyang Middle School Talent School,located in Mianyang,Sichuan were taken as research subjects.The research set Class 1 as Experimental Class(EC)and Class 2 as Controlled Class(CC).Phonics instruction was conducted in Experimental Class for 16 weeks.Before and after the study,four word tests,two questionnaires and several interviews were conducted for EC and CC respectively.The statistics of the qualitative research were recorded by EXCEL and then analyzed by SPSS.23.The results show that: firstly,after 16 weeks of phonics instruction,students’ word reading and word spelling abilities in EC had been improved significantly.Secondly,after phonics training,students in EC have improved their interest and confidence in learning English.The study reveals that phonics instruction can improve word reading and word spelling abilities of Junior middle school students,and also increase their interest and confidence in English learning. |
