A Report On Chinese Translation Of Contemporary Perspectives On Rhetoric(Chapter1 And Chapter 9)

Based on the author's Chinese translation practice of Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric(chapter one and chapter nine),this report demonstrates ways of applying translation strategies under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation.It intends to offer reference to academic monograph translation.Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric is an academic monograph about rhetoric written by Sonja K.Foss,Karen A.Foss,and Robert Trapp,which has generated huge resonance since its publication and was introduced to China in the 1990s.However,there is no Chinese version up to now.Hence,its publication can help attract more Chinese students and scholars to study rhetoric,so as to extend the influence of rhetoric in promoting the harmonious development of the world.Semantic translation and communicative translation are developed on the basis of text type by Peter Newmark in 1980s to settle the long-standing argument between literal translation and free translation.Semantic translation emphasizes the writer and the meaning of the source text,which can be applied in expressive text.While communicative translation focuses on readers and effect and is applied in informative and vocative text.The author of the report holds that although academic monograph itself,with complicity in translation,belongs to expressive text,it still requires the authenticity of the content and the attitude,emotion and value orientation of the writer in the source text.Moreover,it expects the response from target readers.Therefore,academic monograph translation requires translators to convey both meaning and effect,and attach importance to the original writer as well as the target readers.The combination of semantic and communicative translation can thus make reference to academic monograph translation.Furthermore,semantic translation and communicative translation are by no means abstract theories,which can be represented by translation strategies.The author of the report adopts strategies to make the theories more concrete and practical.The translation practice indicates that semantic and communicative translation plays a guiding role in academic monograph translation.
