With the development of the world economy,China?s comprehensive national strength is increasing day by day. Also, cultural exchanges between China and the West are becoming more frequent.Consequently, people will pay more attention to mythical academic monographs with rich cultural information.Besides, more western mythical academic monographs will be translated.Based on the author?s translation practice of the academic monograph Myths of Babylonia and Assyria, this report makes a detailed analysis of the translation difficulties in the practice, which include: 1)translation difficulties concerning deities? names with various epithets and rich cultural information;2)translation difficulties concerning mythical allusions, historical allusions and literary allusions;3)translation difficulties concerning images with different connotation in target language, including animal images and color images.Academic monographs have many culture-loaded words and references to ancient documents, with exact and accurate words.According to Peter Newmark?s theory of text typology, academic monographs are informative texts for the most part. Thus,in translation, the translator should mainly use communicative translation.Sometimes, semantic translation is indispensable.Based on an in-depth analysis of the above translation difficulties, this report focuses on following specific translation methods and techniques: transliteration, literal translation, paraphrase, amplification, footnote and explanation. It is expected that the tentative findings of this practice report can provide enlightenment to academic monograph translation.
