With the depth reform of English teaching and implementation of the English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools(2017)(hereinafter referred to as the “ New Curriculum Standard ”),senior high school English teaching draws more and more attention to cultivate students' communicative competence.Among them,clear requirements are put forward by the New Curriculum Standard for senior high school students' English writing,which shows that writing is an important output in English teaching.However,many problems exist in depth of vocabulary knowlege in students' English writing,such as lack of content,Chinese Enlish,poor vocabulary,spelling errors,vocabulary shortage,misuse of part of speech,choice of words and improper collocation.However,the author has consulted a lot of relevant literature and found that there is little research on the correlation between the depth of vocabulary knowledge and English writing,mostly focused on college students.Therefore,the purpose of this study is to provide suggestions for the teaching of depth of vocabulary knowledge through the study of the correlation between depth of vocabulary knowledge and English writing performance of senior high school students.In this study,a total of 303 students in grade one,grade two,and grade three of a senior high school in Hubei Province,have been examined for their depth knowledge of vocabulary and their scores in two English tests.The purpose of this study is to answer the following three questions: 1.What is the overall level of senior high school students' depth of vocabulary knowledge ? 2.What is the overall level of senior high school students' English writing ? 3.What is the correlation between senior high school students' depth of vocabulary knowledge and English writing proficiency?Through the data analysis,this study finds that: 1.The overall level of senior high school students' depth of vocabulary knowledge is at a low level,the polysemy level of three grades is the highes,and the antonym level of senior three and senior two antonyms is the lowest,and the derivation level of senior one is the lowest.2.The English writing proficiency of high school student is at a low leve.3.There is a strong positive correlation between senior high school students' depth of vocabulary knowledge and English writing proficiency.The depth of vocabulary knowledge has a direct impact on English writing performance.To a large extent,it can predict students' English writing performance.The depth of vocabulary knowledge of senior three students can predict the English writing performance.Based on the above results,the author puts forward some suggestions from the perspectives of the necessity of depth of vocabulary knowledge teaching for senior high school students,attaching great importance to using and cultivating the depth of English vocabulary knowledge ability of students so as to make teachers and students draw more attention to the depth of English vocabulary knowledge.It is hoped that students can improve their English writing by using the depth of vocabulary knowledge.Due to the limited the research object and research tool,the research focused only on one high school,which lacks of universality,so it needs to be improved and strengthened in the future research.
