| Working memory is a significant part of information processing, highly relevant to the interpreting performance. In consecutive interpretation, interpreters can jot down the key information when listening. However, interpretation learners are inclined to make an excess of effort on note-taking,which deprives of the effort for listening comprehension. Therefore, for interpretation learners, working memory training is of vital importance. The Pyramid Principle can make a contribution to working memory because the horizontal relationship and the vertical relationship in the pyramid structure is in line with the logic of human’s thought. Thus,it proves to be easier for interpreters to get command of the Pyramid Principle as a memorization methodThis paper adopts the empirical research and takes the TED English speeches as the material. An experiment is conducted to compare the note-free retelling of the subjects before and after learning the Pyramid Principle, from the perspectives of fluency, completeness and fidelity. In this way,the impact of the Pyramid Principle on the working memory can be unfolded. The research has made the following findings:(1)From the perspective of fluency, completeness, and fidelity, the subjects’ fluency has seen the greatest improvement, and the disfluencies and pause duration in 92.3%subjects’reproduction have remarkably decreased. While the performance of completeness has deteriorated slightly due to the collision between the Pyramid Principle and their original memorization method;(2)Among the introductory flow, key information and supplementary information, both fluency and completeness have been improved in the introductory flow part.On the other hand, the performance on Key Information completeness has declined due to the disparity in the speeches’ structure, the inability to employ inductive reasoning, relatively weak logical thinking ability, etc.Hopefully, this research will provide some constructive insights on the interpretation training in the future. |
