Lu Xun,as one of the greatest writers in the last century, guided the direction of several generations with his writings and thoughts.Kuangren Riji, the first vernacular short story in modern Chinese literature, impressed on the struggling people the need to revolt against "eating-people" feudal ethics.Lu Xun's writings, including Kuangren Riji, have been translated a great many times since last century. The author selected four authoritative English versions home and abroad in different times to make analysis on reframing strategies, whose translators were Chi-chen Wang,Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang,William A.Lyell and Julia Lovell.Baker believes narratives are modified after being translated into other languages. The original narratives and the modified narratives focus on different aspects;therefore, readers' understanding of the text will vary. How are the narratives reframed in four versions of Kuangren Riji?Translators adopted different methods to convey the information contained in the source text. The author applies Baker's narrative theory to analyze reframing strategies in four English versions.Four translations made achievements at their times. To adapt to the new era and reframe the narratives in Kuangren Riji,Lovell reaches to a broader audience than the other three versions, which inspires the following translators to take proper strategies to disseminate Chinese literature. There is no denying that the other three versions have their own strengths.Wang's version lifted the veils of China to the U.S.readers.The Yangs' was selected in the teaching material on campus and used for scientific researches.Lyell's was always an excellent choice for readers interested in Chinese culture, for its copious notes and background knowledge.Hopefully, figuring out the mechanism of narratives modification will be beneficial to China's literature "going global".
