This paper conducted quantitative research on the mediating effect of elementary Chinese learning strategies for Austrian learners,in a bid to explore the relationship between learning motivation and language competence as well as to put forward more targeted teaching suggestions.This paper adopted a simplified mediation model with language learning strategies as the mediator.The author investigated 36 Chinese beginner learners at Confucius Institute in Vienna,Austria,and statistically analyzed and summarized the relationship among learning motivations,language competence,and learning strategies.The results indicate that:(1)Motivations have significant positive direct effect on language competence;(2)Motivations have significant positive indirect effect on language competence,language learning strategies play a critical role in the mediation between motivation and language competence;(3)The sub-path effect size of the mediating effect of language learning strategies shows that:First,only Cognitive strategy have the mediating effect on language competence;Second,the process with the greatest effect is"extrinsic environment motivation?cognitive strategy?language competence";Instrumental motivation and academic motivation also have important indirect effects on language competence through cognitive strategies.Fusion motivation and Learning situational motiivation has no positive predictive effect on language competence with language learning strategies.The results of the study not only help to reveal the relationship between motivation and language competence of Austrian beginning Chinese learners,but also are instructive for Chinese teachers to provide motivation and strategic training for Austrian elementary Chinese students in a more targeted way.
