In recent years,China has paid more and more attention to the cultivation of topnotch innovative talents.The Outline of National Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development Plan(2010-2020)clearly requires that China should follow the laws of both education and the growth of talents,deepen education and teaching reforms,innovate education and teaching methods,and explore a variety of training methods to form a situation where all kinds of talents emerge and top-notch innovative talents are constantly emerging.English ability is a basic skill of top-notch innovative talents,and its importance is self-evident.Until now,however,there has been little research on the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents' English abilities.Besides,there has been little research on analyzing the English skills that these talents consider important and designing relevant English curriculum modules for undergraduates.Based on the above,this research reviews and summarizes the relevant theoretical and practical researches of undergraduate top-notch innovative talents in the past.And based on the theory of needs analysis,this research uses questionnaires,observations,and interviews with students and instructors of the Honors College of Shanghai International Studies University to understand their needs for English abilities in order to improve the design of English curriculum modules.The research finds that the English abilities that the students of the Honors College consider the most needed are: having intellectual enquiry ability and innovative awareness;writing essays and research reports in English;having pragmatic competence;understanding lessons,academic lectures and reports in English;having intercultural communication skills.These abilities clearly reflect the characteristics of English abilities for the top-notch innovative talents.The least needed English abilities are: having English literature creation ability;having knowledge of English linguistics;mastering legal English.Finally,this research builds a set of English curriculum frameworks by factor analysis,which divides the curriculum into seven modules.They are English literacy,English pragmatics,English translation,English literature,English for special purposes,English speech and debate skills,and English intercultural competence.And this research sets specific courses for each module,in order to provide some new ideas for the English courses of the Honors College and to better meet the needs of top-notch innovative talents for English proficiency.
