Conference interpreting is becoming more and more professionalized, covering lots of areas of expertise. So interpreters need a certain degree of extralinguistic knowledge to complete an interpreting task of high quality at conference. The author,as a student majoring in Chinese-English Interpretation, intends to explore the implications of extralinguistic knowledge on the output of consecutive interpreting and coping strategies,so the author studied the consecutive interpretation of a mock conference at which the author was the interpreter. The speech was given by Professor Joseph Nye of Harvard University. The theme was “Will the Liberal International Order Survive?” The author defines extralinguistic knowledge and explains its importance. The thesis also includes a detailed introduction of the mock conference and the author's preparation as well as what kind of extralinguistic knowledge is needed for this conference. The author studies the implications of extralinguistic knowledge based on examples from this conference interpretation. After analyzing the case, the author proposes some coping strategies in case of lacking extralinguistic knowledge. After studying the case, the author finds out that extralinguistic knowledge helps interpreters do the job more accurately and fluently, while lacking it will result in misinterpretation, omission, ambiguity and improper pauses. There are several coping strategies proposed in the thesis. They include accumulating more world knowledge and full preparation before the conference, proper effort allocation, using interpreting skills and maintaining a calm state of mind during the conference, and reflection and review after the conference.
