Extralinguistic knowledge is of great significance in interpreting. With reference to related literature, the author divides extralinguistic knowledge into encyclopedia knowledge, thematic knowledge and contextual knowledge. And the thesis aims to discuss the problems arising from the lack of extralinguistic knowledge in English-toChinese consecutive interpreting by a case study on the speech given by Ian Newton about the refugee crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the case, the lack of extralinguistic knowledge caused problems in two aspects—fidelity and fluency. In terms of fidelity, insufficient extralinguistic knowledge led to misinterpretation and omissions. And in terms of fluency, the lack of extralinguistic knowledge resulted in improper suspension and self-correction.At the end,the thesis gives suggestions on how to tackle the lack of extralinguistic knowledge so as to avoid the problems mentioned above.
