This is a report on the Chinese translation of The Priory of Orange Trees(Chapter 2)and discusses the translation of fantasy fictions under the guidance of Catford‘s Translation Shifts Theory.Catford‘s Translation Shifts Theory includes two major parts, namely, level shifts and category shifts.Level shifts involve four aspects: grammar, lexis, phonology and graphology. And there are four types of shifts happening in the category type: structural shifts, class shifts, unit shifts and intra-system shifts. The Priory of Orange Trees is a fantasy fiction about a world that will fight against dragons.I undertook the translation of the second chapter of this book, and based on the translation practice,I reflected and analyzed my own translation process from the perspective of Translation Shifts Theory, mainly from the perspective of linguistics. This report mainly contains five parts. The first part is introduction to the fantasy fiction, the writer, the excerpted chapter and the structure of this report. The second part is about J.C.Catford,the study of Translation Shifts Theory both home and abroad and the reasons of the application of the theory. The third part is process description, including pre-translation,while translation and after-translation.The fourth part is specific applications of the theory on the basis of the excerpted chapter and the last part is conclusion.I believe that the application of the Translation Shifts Theory can make the translation more smooth and conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers and make target readers interested in fantasy fictions. It is hoped that the translator‘s summary and comprehension of the translation project can give enlightenment to other translators who are engaged in the translation of fantasy fictions and flexibly use translation strategies and techniques in combination with context.
