The English for occupational purposes(EOP)refers to English that is suitable for work. And it is subsumed under English for special purposes. In the process of college English teaching in our country, the study of occupational English needs analysis focuses more on the subjective feelings of English learners, while the empirical study of the objective needs of occupational English has not been paid enough attention. Therefore, this paper investigates and analyzes the college English teaching needs of engineering graduates from two aspects, one is the subjective feelings of graduates;the other is the actual needs of employers, that is,the objective needs of the industry. The main research questions are as follows: First, what are the specific English requirements of engineering-related graduates from their own perspectives? Second, what English proficiency is needed for engineering-related graduates in their jobs from their bosses' perspectives? Third, what suggestions do the graduates and their bosses give to the English course design? The survey is mainly conducted by questionnaire, which is divided into two parts:Graduate questionnaire and employer questionnaire. There are 22 questions in the graduate questionnaire, which can be divided into three parts.Questions 1 to 7 mainly involve personal information;questions 8 to 15 mainly involve the subjective feelings of graduates;questions 16 to 22 mainly involve the needs of the industry, but from the subjective perspective of graduates. There are 15 questions in the employer questionnaire, some of which are the same as the graduate questionnaire.Different questions can be divided into the following two parts. The fourth to the ninth questions mainly investigate the employers' evaluation and satisfaction of the present English level of graduates;the twelfth to the fourteenth questions mainly investigate the actual needs for English ability of the industry.Through the analysis and comparison of 122 questionnaires received, the research problem of this paper is basically solved.First of all,the subjective feelings of graduates for English needs are generally consistent with the needs of the industry, that is,bothsides believe that oral English ability and certain reading ability are the most important;second, there are differences in the needs of both sides. In the actual work process, due to the characteristics of engineering, the ability to translate technical data is actually more valued by employers of the industries;finally, suggestions from both sides for college English teaching Are offered for designing English courses. In addition,it can be concluded from the research that in order to avoid the cognitive differences between graduates and employers on the needs of occupational English,we should conduct the analysis from both subjective and objective aspects at the same time,so as to grasp the needs more accurately and guide the teaching work better.
