| In 2018,the author participated in a translation project on overseas English reports about Confucius Institute(CI)initiated by School of International Education of Shandong University.The author was mainly responsible for translating the non-American English reports,from mainstream media in Asia,Africa and Europe,such as Financial Times,All Africa,Ghana News Agency,and Xinhuanet.com.In addition to the short length,timeliness and large amount of information in the English news,the characteristics of the language in the news include short sentences,colloquialism and a large number of indirect quotations.The translation compensation theory originated from the debate between translatability and untranslatability in 1980 s.Though the studies of the translation compensation theory are abundant in some degree,its hysteresis related to the long history of translation gives it the right chance and potential to have the further development.In the practice,the translator mainly uses some strategies such as contextual amplification,generalization and specification under the guidance of compensation theory to translate English news reports into Chinese in both linguistic and culture levels.From the perspective of language,it mainly focuses on annotation in semantic level and textual level to solve the possible misunderstanding.Moreover,from the perspective of culture,compensation strategies such as generalization,contextual amplification and aesthetic compensation are mainly used to make up for the loss in discourse and culture.Besides,combining with the cultural load features in English news reports on Confucius Institute,the translator applies the cross-cultural compensation strategies to the translation text to analyze the cultural load features from the Chinese confidence in culture and the improvement in discourse power in the world.Through the translation practice,the translator concludes the difficulties and drawbacks and provides some suggestions on translating English news reports. |
