The English translation of Chinese poetry integrates both the translators' translation of and research on Chinese classic poetry.Their translated versions of Chinese poetry are obviously presented in the body of their books, but their researches in the field of the poetry are normally embodied in the introductory texts. However, scholars have paid little attention to these texts.Translating and studying the texts provides a new perspective from the poetry translators to study Chinese poetry in the West, better improving the dissemination of Chinese culture by means of learning their experience of translating Chinese literature and culture. The selected books respectively are: American translator Burton Watson's The Old Man Who Does as He Pleases: Selections from the Poetry and Prose of Lu Yu(1973,hereinafter referred to as The Old Man)and The Selected Poems of Du Fu(2002)and Japanese scholar Shigeyoshi Obata's The Works of Li Po,The Chinese Poet(1922,hereinafter referred to as The Works of Li Po).This thesis is a translation report of the introductory texts of these three books.Based on the Adaption Theory,it illustrates the back translation strategies of the texts from three investigation angles of the theory: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability and dynamics of adaptability.Firstly, with regard to contextual adaption, the thesis presents that any single adaption to a unique context is not applicable in the translation process after making analysis from the context of both the source language and the target one;and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication are applied accordingly.Secondly,it illustrates the translation methods at the lexical and syntactic level and solves actual translation problems in the text, making the adaption from the aspect of the language structure.Lastly,as for the dynamics of adaptability,it makes the analysis from the change of time and proposes that translators should make adaption according to different situations. The thesis demonstrates that the Adaption Theory,a pragmatic theory,is available in the analysis of translation strategies. It is recommended that translators make relevant adaption in the light of factual situations, because translation also acts as a socialized activity. The translation strategies and methods applied in the report are: foreignization, domestication, zero translation, deletion, sentence structural adjustment, original text restoration, and annotation, etc. In the final analysis, this translation report illustrates the back translation strategies of the introductory texts on the basis of the Adaption Theory. It is an attempt to provide references for the translation of Chinese culture from a new perspective.
