Wu Hufan,born in an honorable family in Suzhou,Jiangsu Province,is a famous painter,collector,connoisseur,calligrapher and Ci writer.His collections cover a wide range and mostly are treasure.Wu has a reputation as “one eye” for his great achievement on painting and calligraphy appreciation,and holds an unshakable position in the appreciation and collection circle and even the painting and calligraphy circle in the 1930 s and 1940 s.This paper,focusing on Wu's collections and imitation works,explores the impacts of the appreciation and imitation on his creation.This paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to the background of Wu's painting and calligraphy appreciation and collection and the purposes and significance of studying the impacts of painting and calligraphy appreciation and collection on the creation.The second chapter sorts out the sources of Wu's collections.The collections are mainly from the legacy of his grandfather Wu Dacheng and maternal grandfather Shen Yunchu,from the dowry of his wife Pan Jingshu(from a notable family in Suzhou)and from his purchase and barter.The third chapter,centering on Wu's imitation works,figures out that he studies the predecessors'brushwork and texturing methods through wholly imitating the landscape paintings so that he can understand and appraise ancient paintings through practical experiences.For example,the discovery of“Remained Mountain Painting(?????)”thoroughly displays his ability in terms of appreciation and collection.The fourth chapter analyzes Wu's artistic styles and the impacts of his appreciation and collection on the creation through studying colors and boneless methods in his landscape paintings.In the end,this paper concludes the artistic values of Wu's works.This paper explores the characteristics of Wu's imitation works and their impacts on his later creation,during which the author actively consults the related document literature andcarries out a deeper analysis on this subject.
