National image is considered as one of the important components of a country's "soft power",which can reflect a country's comprehensive strength and influence. Therefore, the shaping and dissemination of the national image is highly valued by governments of various countries. With the improvement of China's comprehensive national strength and economic status,China's national image is becoming more and more important.China is also making great efforts to "self-mold" its national image with the help of mass media.Non-verbal symbols are one of the main means of mass media to disseminate information.Non-verbal symbols, due to their unique commonality, cross cultural background, region, race and other constraints, play an important role in cultural communication. In 2012,the documentary "A Bite of China" was published, which caused a great response from the society.Among them, the successful use of nonverbal symbols played an important role in shaping China's national image. The purpose of this paper is to systematically sort out the important use of nonverbal symbols through the research of CCTV documentary "China on the Bite of the Tongue",discuss how the documentary portrays China's national image, and discuss the role of nonverbal symbols in spreading the national image,so as to provide theoretical reference for other documentaries. This paper uses the research method of combining text analysis and case analysis to study 22 programs of "China on the tip of the tongue" in three seasons. This article is divided into four chapters to elaborate. The first chapter defines the relevant concepts and sorts out the concepts of national image, symbols and non-linguistic symbols. The second chapter explains how the documentary "A Bite of China" portrays and disseminates China's national image. The third chapter makes a systematic study of the nonverbal symbols in "A Bite of China" and concludes that there are mainly four kinds of nonverbal symbols used in this documentary, namely, ethnic symbols, traditional cultural symbols, geographical symbols and audio and music symbols. They have played a great role in shaping a beautiful and civilized, vast and powerful image of China, which is the key research part of the full text. The fourth chapter summarizes the problems in the application of nonverbal symbols in this documentary and puts forward corresponding countermeasures.
