This paper is a translation practice of Family Life, about 12,000 words. As the masterpiece of Akhil Sharma,an Indian American writer, this autobiography tells a bitter story about an Indian-born family's living and suffering in America. The translator hopes that this translation practice can offer Chinese readers a deep understanding towards the life and situation of Indian American immigrants, and can also provide some inspiration to the development of biography translation. This report selects pages 99 to 163 of Family Life as the translating text. There are many difficulties in understanding and expression while translating. The original text is a biography, with plain language and few long and complex sentences. However,if we just translate the text literally, the language will be lack of logic and hard to understand.By using communicative translation, the translator divides the use of the method into three levels:lexicon, syntax and text.Through case analysis, the author concludes that translation guided by this theory should put emphasis on the reader's response, pursuing that the response of target readership toward the target text is the same as that of the original readers. Moreover, the translator should lay stress on the transmission of original information rather than on its sentence structure so as to deliver a qualified translation. In short, biography translation should not be arbitrary,it is needed to reproduce the original information within the specific context faithfully.
