Nineteen Ancient Poems occupies important position in the history of Chinese classical poetry.It is the inheritance of the Book of Songs and the Songs of Chu and beginning of the development of five-character poems,which are rich in images.The translation of “Nineteen Ancient Poems” into English for English readers to have the opportunity to know and appreciate classical Chinese poems and aesthetic emotion of Chinese.As the soul of Chinese classical poetry,translation of images in poems will directly decide whether the emotion contained in poetry can be conveyed or not,which is one of the key and difficult points in translating classical Chinese poems.This thesis takes English translation of images in Nineteen Ancient Poems as an example,focusing on probing into the classification,features and translation method of poems.According to the classification method of image generation,the image in poems are divided into three categories: archetype images,existing images,improvised images.Through the textual analysis of the translation of typical images,this thesis studies the effect of the aesthetic emotion of these images in English and then probes into the translation method of different images.The findings of the study are expected to help translators to recognize and realize the images in Nineteen Ancient Poems from different perspectives,and then use different translation method to better improve the quality of translation,and thus effectively convey the aesthetic emotion contained in the poems.Meanwhile,it may also be helpful to expand and enrich research space of translation studies of Nineteen Ancient Poems.
