The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai was first published in Shanghai by Han Bangqing in 1892.As the first illustrated periodical of novels in China,its illustrations enjoy great academic research value.The first volume of the Late Qing Dynasty Periodicals Collection,which was published by China Library Press in 2015,contains13 issues of The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai(published 15 issues in total,the 13 and 14 issues were lost).As a matter of fact,the collection provides rich data for the study of The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai.This paper mainly focuses on the texts and illustrations of three columns in The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai: Biography of the Flowers In Shanghai,Manuscripts of the Immortals,and the Wandering Collection.By putting the periodical into its time to explore the cause of its founding and the intersection of tradition and new changes reflected in the form and content of its graphics.And by observing the relationship between text and illustrations,which is an interdisciplinary study method in the field of Comparative Literature,to explore the multi-level intertextual relationship between text and illustrations in The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai.On such basis,therefore,we could study further into the illustrators’ acceptance and re-creation of the texts —as shown in the illustrations — as well as the changes brought by the combination of text and illustrations in narration and reading experiences so that we could measure the value and influence of The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai as the first periodical of novels in China.In addition to the introduction,this paper has four chapters.The first chapter introduces the development of illustrations in novel before the founding of The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai,and combined with the background of the era of The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai,analyzes the reasons for its publication,and concludes that the birth of it is inseparable from China.The separation of novel illustrations from texts and pictures to the development of texts and pictures combined with the development of the social background of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty,the prosperity of urban industry and commerce,the expansion of readers,the improvement of printing conditions,and the development of the newspaper industry,and Han Bangqing Then,with the help of new era conditions,this attempt of fiction journals was made.The second chapter explores the inheritance of the traditional illustration form in The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai and the new changes in the content of the graphic illustrations.It is considered that in the form,the first and second columns uses the traditional illustration style of the above figure and the following style.In terms of content,the bizarre twists and turns in the Manuscripts of the Immortals reflects the author’s rejection of traditional moral criticism.The Biography of the Flowers In Shanghai pioneered the story of the story in brothel in dialects.In fact,the content of these three columns reflects the changing factors.The third chapter specifically analyzes the multi-level intertextual relationship between the texts and illustrations in The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai.It is believed that in the process of the texts’ translation,it not only reflects the help of drawing into the text,but also reflects the literary life,in which the painter is based on text.Based on the content,the plot is mainly selected from the plots that are rich in incubation and climax plots.In the painting of figures,the difference between the primary and secondary characters is emphasized.In the description of the environment,the characteristics of the environment in the text are emphasized.In terms of time and space,it also reflects the artist’s unique concept.In the process of transformation,the illustration has the deformation of deletion,addition,modification and transcendence to the text.Based on the third chapter,the fourth chapter analyzes the acceptance and re-creation of the painter reflected in the differences between the texts and illustrations,and considers that the texts depicting exotic wonders in the Wandering Collections reflect the painter’s incomprehension and text.Exotic imagination,and analyze the impact of the coexistence of illustration and text on narrative and readers’ reading.Finally,the value of The Remarkable Book Of Shanghai is summarized,and it is considered that it marks the birth of a new mode of literary production and communication,that is,the periodicalization of novels and the addition of image media.This new mode of literary production and communication brings changes in reader acceptance and the relationship between readers and authors which should not be ignored for their pioneering significance.
