In English-Chinese interpreting learning, language competence plays a fundamental role. The research topic of this thesis is the correlation between one's English language competence and their interpreting competence and the correlation between the B language,English, and the development of interpreting competence. In this research, two interviews for interpreting teachers and a questionnaire for MI students were conducted. The research was unfolded from two different perspectives of teachers and studentsThe researcher of this thesis found that a large majority of MI students' English language competence still has a gap with the standard of B language made by some professional interpreting institutions, such as AIIC.At different stages,English language competence of MI students has different effects on the development of their interpreting competence. It is always important for an English-Chinese interpreter to update English language competence. The results collected from the questionnaire showed that most MI students thought that their English language competence was improved through checking their scores of various language tests they took before and after they were enrolled.A large majority of MI students thought that the changes of English language competence has a positive correlation with their interpreting competence and the changes of the former will affect the latter directly.Compared with the effects of language competence on English-Chinese interpreting competence, almost 80%of them thought that Chinese-English interpreting competence would be affected more by the changes of English language competence.
