Enlightenment Of Gile's Modes For Promoting Interpreters' Competence

With the rapid development of globalization,the connection and communication among China and other countries are much closer,which lies in economy,politics and culture exchange,etc.Many visitors all over the world are coming to China to see brilliant Chinese culture.In that case,interpreting plays an significant role.Commissioned by Hebei Jinhua Travel Agency,the author practiced the escort interpreting for an English visitor Carl.This practice took Zhengding Rong Mansion in Shijiazhuang as the destination,which was designed and constructed in light of Chinese classic novel A Dream of Red Mansions.The author made adequate preparations for the mission,which include rereading the English version of A Dream of Red Mansions and making a term list and quality control plan,etc.This thesis is guided by Gile's modes,raised by distinguished interpreting scholar-Daniel Gile,which include two influential theories: Comprehension Equation and Effort Model of consecutive interpreting.Before and during the interpreting,the author combined knowledge of the language and extra-linguistic knowledge and analyzed them,so as to achieve the expectation of understanding source language accurately and interpreting target language correctly.Meanwhile,In the process of interpreting,the author obeyed the Efforts Model so as not to dedicate much effort on one single item.In this way,the author avoided the omission of integrity of source language due to stressing much on notes or the misunderstanding and omitted interpreting because of relying on short-term memory and ignoring notes.Through presenting the interpreting practice,this thesis discussed the enlightenment of Gile's Mode on interpreters' competence.On intelligence qualities,the author needs to improve interpreting skill and expands knowledge of the language and extra-linguistic knowledge further.On non-intelligence qualities,the author should build psychological qualities,avoid over stress and make everything well arranged.Through the practice,the author made the following conclusions: Comprehension Equation and Efforts Model of consecutive interpreting can help the author understand and interpret source language correctly.They also offer the orientation for interpreters on how to improve their competence,which benefit interpreters and learners a lot.
